What can we achieve with 25/35/35 character lines of text and a minimal budget? We have been experimenting with Google Adwords to find out.
The great thing about running a startup is that we’re always learning new things. The last couple of days we’ve been experimenting with advertising. The long term plan is to have widgetised averts available via our affiliate scheme. These will be in a range of shapes and sizes, and designed to suit the needs of the publishers who place them. The text content of the ads will be different depending on if you’re registered with Learn10 or not. If you use Learn10, then you’ll see your personal word list (scrolling, pair by pair).
The advantage to the publisher will be that they have useful content for language learners actually within their advertising space, and will gain a commission if they send any customers our way. We are currently experimenting with OpenX as the framework for advertising - it’s the only system we’ve found so far which handles iFrame ads - necessary in order to deliver our user tailored content.
Even with a token budget, you can immediately get a sense of what works, with who, and where. For example, we now know that there are about 100 pages running Google Adsense text ads & that we can define positions via language & geography enabling us to break up the market into specific segments and design very different ads accordingly.
One ad that remains constant on Google is our 10 daily words, in English. Once our next version of learn10 is released, content will be synchronised with these 10 English words… and our plan of teaching people language using the techniques of the advertising industry will begin to take shape.
